Moving to Italy and planning to drive? One of the first things you’ll hear about is the patente di guida (driving license).
But then comes the confusion: Patente A or Patente B? Which one is right for you?
Don’t worry—we’ll break it down step by step so you can understand the difference and choose the right one for your needs.
Patente B is the most common license in Italy. With it, you can:
👉 Most immigrants who want to drive a car in Italy choose Patente B.
Patente A is specifically for motorcycles. Depending on your age, you can get different categories:
👉 If you want to ride big bikes (more than 125cc) or travel outside Italy, you’ll need Patente A.
Cars: With Patente A ❌ No | With Patente B ✅ Yes
Motorcycles up to 125cc: Patente A ✅ Yes (depends on sub-category) | Patente B ✅ Yes (but only in Italy)
Motorcycles above 125cc: Patente A ✅ Yes | Patente B ❌ No
Minimum Age: Patente A → 16+ | Patente B → 18+
